Having the opportunity to intern at VIP NeuroRehabilitation Center was the most influential and inspiring experience of my Senior year at California State University of San Marcos. I had the honor of working and meeting with patients who showed that being disabled was not a restriction on their pursuit of their life goals, dreams, and quality of life. My responsibilities at the center included: providing direct care to various patients under supervision of physical therapists and technician aides , assisting patients on Lokomat and Giger machines, supervising the patients on the Lokomat and Giger machines, demonstrating a better understanding of the benefits of the Lokomat and Giger machines, observing the physical therapists and technician aides while they performed static stretches on the patients, maintaining a clean environment by placing all equipment back into their designated areas and disinfecting all equipment , assisting the technician aides in correctly wrapping the arms and legs of the patients with ACE or Velcro bandages used, and promoting a positive working environment for staff and patients by providing quality service. Volunteering at VIP NeuroRehabilitation Center for 90+ hours helped guide me in the career path of my choice. It allowed me to see other Kinesiology positions, such as, technician aides, exercise specialists, and physical therapists, in a different light than from reading about them in the pages of my book. Each staff member gave me advice on future schools, future positions to look into, motivation to continue on with my education, and to explore different aspects of the Kinesiology field.
Fatigue from school, sleepless nights from studying for tests, and a busy work schedule are factors that could have stopped me from going to my internship. But luckily they did not. My time at the center was worthwhile. I learned how to communicate better to patients, I have a better understanding of spinal injuries, cerebral palsy, and etc , and I also became more passionate about the field I am in. Helping others strive to become stronger, healthier, and happier is a job I would enjoy for the rest of my life. As I continue on my path to find my calling, I would like to thank Dr. Marcus, Kayla, Kristin, Mica, and Alex for inviting me into their home and inspiring me to play a small part in impacting a life of an individual.
